To me, a leader is anyone with more influence than most over the people around them. Through their role, their voice or their creative work. Founders. Team leaders. Artists. Creators. If you’re reading this, that’s probably you.
Leadership brings power and reward. It also brings responsibility, because whatever state you’re in, the people around you catch it.
The world we’re leading in
Always on. Constant change. Uncertainty everywhere. And less real human connection. Our nervous systems weren’t built for these conditions, and they read them as threat.
So we react. We push harder, control more, and decide too fast or not at all. And because a leader’s state spreads, it doesn’t stop with us.
We’re living through an epidemic of reactive leadership: in boardrooms, in teams, in politics, at home. You’ve seen it. You’ve probably been it. I certainly have.
The alternative
Regulated leadership is leading with nervous system intelligence: understanding how you respond under pressure, and working with it rather than against it.
It isn’t calm. You can be regulated and completely lit up. It’s capacity: the capacity to feel the full force of a moment and still choose your next move. Regulated leaders keep access to their judgement, instincts and values when it matters most.
It isn’t a personality type, or a political position. It can be learned.
What I do about it
I help leaders and founders build nervous system intelligence in three places:
- In your business. Strategy: vision and plans people can actually carry. →
- In your team. Training: teams with the clarity and confidence to act. →
- In yourself. Coaching: access to the answers you already have. →
I also champion regulated leadership in public, through content and in the Regulated Leadership newsletter. I write about what I find: the science, the patterns, and the leaders getting it right. Then I turn it into essays, guides, models and interviews anyone can use.
